US Congress overrides Obama's veto of 9/11 bill letting families sue Saudi Arabia

Obama suffered a  political blow on Wednesday, when the US Congress overturned his veto of a Bill that would allow the victims of 9/11 terrorist attacks to Saudi Arab .

The US congress vote is a clear sign of the political climate facing the Saudis. The bill allows the courts to waive claims to foreign sovereign immunity in cases involving terrorist acts on US soil. It is rooted in the suspicion that Saudi government officials gave assistance to the 9/11 hijackers while they were in the US, a sentiment that remains strong in the US Congress.

Obama expressed disappointment. “The concern that I’ve had has nothing to do with Saudi Arabia per se or my sympathy for 9/11 families, it has to do with me not wanting a situation in which we’re suddenly exposed to liabilities for all the work that we’re doing all around the world, and suddenly finding ourselves subject to the private lawsuits in courts where we don’t even know exactly whether they’re on the up and up, in some cases”
